In 2009 I was stationed at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam with the Joint Pow/MIA Accounting Command as an U.S Army Infantry Mountaineer. I served as Mountain Section Recovery Sergeant providing technical expertise to Search and Recovery teams conducting global operations in support of JPAC’s personnel accounting efforts. The incoming Detachment 4 Commander, LTC Raul Gonzalez, was implementing a new P.T. regiment in the unit and was selecting 10 soldiers to attend CrossFit Oahu’s military Train the Trainer Program(TTP). Owner and head coach Bryant Powers wanted to provide new and innovative approaches to physical training all based around the core principles of, of course CrossFit. For 5 incredible 3 hour mornings I learned about the foundational elements of a CrossFit bias strength and conditioning program so that I could in turn implement those techniques into personnel mission readiness. I continued training at CFO, learning from the most experienced CrossFit, gymnastics and Olympic lifting coaches as well as in my eyes the most amazing nutritionist I’ve ever met in Courtney Johnson. My passion for CFO and regaining my health and well being grew to new heights. An interwoven family of military brethren and CFO ohana gave me an outlet for growth not only in my military career but my growing passion for life. As part of unit readiness, JPAC sent me for my CF Lvl1 certification as continued education as well as helping my personal pursuits in becoming a CrossFit instructor, strength and conditioning coach after my military career was finished. I pursued as many lectures, seminars and multiple CrossFit certifications as possible to grow myself to provide the best possible coaching I can.
