As one of the first members of CFO, I was reading Freddy’s blog at CF One World and felt inspired to take a trip back in time and share the evolution of CFO and our humble beginnings. Along with CrossFit as a whole, we’ve come a long way, gained so many amazing friends along the way, had to say goodbye to too many but the memories are forever!
“Pain In Paradise”
The OG members will remember the park very fondly. We started at Kapiolani Park then moved to Sand Island Park and ended up at both ends of Kaka’ako! Our warm up included carrying all of the equipment down to the ocean. We only had rings for pullups, used the benches for box jumps, prayed our wallballs didn’t go over the wall into the bathrooms, and sprinted that ridiculous hill too many times. We finished most of our workouts playing on the slack line for an hour then heading to Jamba Juice for a post WOD refreshment!
Most old school crossfitters started in someone’s garage and it’s nice to hear when that’s still happening today. Like the park, it was minimal and shared equipment, running through the neighborhood, wall balls on the side of the house and lots of playtime afterwards. It was a long drive to Kunia from town but it was worth every extra hour of driving!
This is when it started to get serious! Our first real gym, more equipment, learning how to scale movements correctly, the CF Games, charity WODs, hoping our wallballs and weights didn’t anger the neighbors, and too many memories to write.
Although we may appreciate it more than most of you, this is the (hand) making of your favorite pullup rig I think Marcus, Bryant, Gretchen, Craig and I had black lung for a month sanding/cleaning that thing. Beer and pizza helped us get through!
The facility you all know and love…our second home! When we upgraded to our current facility, it started to get ‘real’ serious. We had to do a lot of painting, construction, order lots more equipment, add more classes and train more coaches. We’ve evolved and transformed throughout the last 5 years here and we still aren’t finished. It’s amazing what a little art will do to a space! What would you love to see on the big back wall?
As CrossFit was originally adapted to prepare for the unknown and unknowable, we’ve also trained hundreds of military personnel over the years. Thank you all for your service!
And the story continues…..Waipio, Kailua, Pearl City and Kaneohe…will all have their amazing stories and memories…what could be next??
